The gift arrived around midnight. Unexpected, unwrapped and left for me to find when waking up.
The past few months have been a crazy whirlwind of getting an online publication off the ground, pushing creative concepts and being approached to join a team of female dynamos adamant to see safety restored in a city under siege by a crime demon.
Consumed by the commodity of news happening around the clock despite the country being in lockdown still, staying ahead of what demands attention and occasionally remembering to exhale, not much thought gets spent on smelling the roses right now. For a while encounters shared with my tribe have been booked for express check-out and shockingly so.
When the opportunity presented itself to step off the rollercoaster and see what was left out on the porch to be discovered in the morning it was met with much excitement. After all, who doesn't like a gift selected specially for you, having your name written all over it and received when least expected?
Not all gifts arrive neatly stowed in flimsy paper dolled up with ribbons, in party bags bulging with tissue paper or accompanied by the popping of champagne corks and an announcement of sorts. Soul stuff is scattered all along our life journey. We simply need to identify the pieces left by individuals we allow into the space reserved for those with whom we spend moments we get to cherish.
Undoubtedly I'm a hoarder of soul objects collected and stashed in a secret place. I've never been able to succumb to emotional minimalism for I tried and failed dismally. But then I’d rather live in a gallery layered with tokens resonating thoughtful connection than a bare hull stripped of memories.
So, when my soul friend Tanya left me the two photos of baobabs – mementoes of her weekend in a place where I spent my childhood years - on WhatsApp at 00:49 on Sunday I didn't question her actions. She knew it was the perfect fit. Because the combo of elephants+baobabs is rather hard to find in this concrete jungle at this stage.
