For years it has been the intention to move to the city of the 012 dialling code, pops of jacaranda purple, coffee spots dotted across the urban landscape, the Union Buildings and blinged-up, well-to-do tannies dashing somewhere in their SUVs.
Somehow life happened and it was put on hold. And then it happened. Earlier this year the grande opportunity for relocation presented itself. Of course it was accompanied by doubt and a million questions, but that slowly subsided with settling into the appointed environs.
While determining the lay of the land and adjusting to things foreign, like late-afternoon thunderstorm warnings, traffic volumes and travelling distances, there was only so much exploring that could be fitted into a single day.
Eight months later a seamless transition has been recorded around the blending in with a mass of city dwellers who go about their business without much interest in their neighbours' doings.
I'm now that person who seeks out cheese directly from the makers trading alongside the fresh produce growers who start to sell around dawn at the Saturday market. Browsing among pièces de résistance at antiques fairs. Marvelling at degrees of literary expression lining shelves in dusty book stores filled to the brim with coveted secondhand editions, the worth unbeknownst to the shop hand. Stumbling upon sushi bars scattered in all directions. Drinking in the hum on a bustling sidewalk. Pausing to appreciate art on a wall and learning a trade from practising artisans. Attending the odd expo or convention. Stalking glorious wall-to-wall sunsets in the late afternoon before the concrete jungle starts slowing down its frantic pace. Finding inspiration from the world around me.
As much as we don't know where life would eventually take us, we can attempt to embrace the gems strewn across our path.
Living the moment and to the full is what I'm doing right here, right now. It is worth celebrating!
